Geographies of Desperation
As Katie Mazer reports at Briarpatch Magazine, Canada's brutal mistreatment of rural working-class people has turned Orwellian, with zealous, quota-meeting bureaucrats developing cruel means of removing what meager benefits are available to the seasonally employed--in some cases targeting whole communities for punishment. As government labour market planners conspire to herd families away from their roots, free market fanaticism is clearly driving this modern human outrage. As Mazer observes, labor security -- rooted in place and community -- is deemed a threat to the market, and thus an evil to be rooted out by government.
