Smooth Talkers: Marketing Imperial Civil Society

After the Vietnam War, big dogs in the Democratic Party transitioned from belligerent blowhards to smooth talkers. The party of cold warriors became hot stuff. Capitalizing on the popular subculture of peace and love, the Democrats under President Clinton initiated the era of "humanitarian" war. As such, American hegemony could be repackaged as philanthropic.

Ironically, the breakthrough in marketing imperial civil society came about as a result of Clinton's misadventures with his Oval Office intern Monica Lewinsky. When Big Dog got caught with his pants down, the Democratic Party turned to social media for support. Mobilizing support through the NGO MoveOn, Democrats were able to turn a national embarrassment into an organizing opportunity. As time went on, social media would prove to be a useful tool for social engineering.

As servants of Wall Street, the Democrats -- through MoveOn -- began what would become a tsunami of deceptive devices, from Avaaz to Purpose. As pro-war promoters, these NGOs were able to divert attention from high crimes and focus public attention on false pretenses, in turn used to justify perpetual militarism. With the capture of boards at nominally progressive NGOs like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, the neoliberals represented by Clinton introduced a sophisticated new psychological warfare element to the public arena.

With laundered funding aplenty -- available through neoliberal foundations like Clinton, Gates, Soros, Ford and Rockefeller -- Wall Street (with help from Madison Avenue) has managed to consolidate its war-making portfolio of investments, while simultaneously acquiring a controlling interest in big international NGOs. As civil society institutions (living on pre-coup residual creds), the NGOs, in turn, legitimate the neoliberal incarnation of fascism.

As the architect of NAFTA, Clinton's bonafides on Wall Street are rock solid. While his star faded as a result of the 1999 WTO Ministerial in Seattle, the Clinton Global Initiative to implement Wall Street's Millenium Development Goals seems to have resurrected his pathetic leadership to gold. Perhaps -- like his Wag the Dog war in Sudan -- in time, the memory of Clinton sucking up to the daughter of Uzbekistan's president (known for boiling his political opponents alive) in order to finance his foundation (on proceeds from slave labor) will be forgotten.

PR vs. News

In their recent book, “The Death and Life of American Journalism,” Robert McChesney and John Nichols tracked the number of people working in journalism since 1980 and compared it to the numbers for public relations. Using data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, they found that the number of journalists has fallen drastically while public relations people have multiplied at an even faster rate. In 1980, there were about .45 PR workers per 100,000 population compared with .36 journalists. In 2008, there were .90 PR people per 100,000 compared to .25 journalists. That’s a ratio of more than three-to-one, better equipped, better financed.

Unconscious Milieu

I recently called out TRNN and FAIR for hypocrisy in covering up the Klein cult con. They rant about broadcast media giving biased attention to 350's climate march, while self-censoring on behalf of Naomi.

I believe this is a matter of stupidity, not malice, which just goes to show how naive the orthodox left is in the US.

If one takes Avaaz, Purpose and 350 campaigns at their word, our most pressing problems will be solved by Wall Street and the Pentagon. Looking at the agenda and plans (as opposed to rhetoric) of this PR PSYWAR AXIS, submission to hierarchy and surrender to aristocracy is paramount.

This is what I term reversion to infancy, where responsibilities are ceded in the face of overwhelming crises, and political illiteracy is enshrined. 

The HEAD case progression (hysteria/euphoria/anger/depression) of the Klein cult is a fascinating phenomenon. The 350 swooning over partnership with Wall Street aristocrats like Rockefeller Brothers gives new meaning to self-delusion.

The celebrity worship we are witnessing, by these adherents of advertising, indicates they have already become groupies of gala. For all their claims to raising consciousness, The Climateers are a distinctly unconscious milieu.

Whenever progressives come up with another ineffective response to a crisis, they fall back on the consciousness-raising excuse as justification. They are very good (and experienced) losers.

Skirting the Real News

It's fine that Hedges and DeChristopher decry frauds like Jones, but given 350's many hoaxes funded by Wall Street (i.e. KXL, Clean Energy, Divestment, New Economy), when are independent journalists going to examine Klein and 350, itself a Big Green NGO on the payroll of Rockefeller Brothers and Warren Buffett. If you're going to investigate major fraud, you might want to get real about the agenda of Avaaz, Purpose and 350. Skirting around the issue of hijacked activism that 350 represents aids Wall Street, not Main Street.

 

Climate Change Clean Up

With Wall Street, the UN, 350 and the Rockefellers all on the same side, can it be long before they announce a new partnership to invest in clean energy?

Could this be modeled on REDD and the 2008 bank bailout? 
 
Sure! Just give Wall Street the keys to the U.S. Treasury. 

Wait, I forgot, they already have them. I wonder what they will name this fiasco?

350: Agent Saboteur

As reported at Wrong Kind of Green, 350 in 2010 tried to sabotage the People's Agreement in Cochabamba, Bolivia--the first and only climate conference led by indigenous peoples. While 350 and other NGOs attempted to get indigenous leaders to back away from a 300 parts per million and 1 degree Celsius limit position, the indigenous leaders held firm. Since then, 350 has fought ceaselessly to promote the 2 degree lie, and to protect the interests of its Wall Street benefactors.

 

Rapture in Blue

Witnessing the radical blue rants, escalating in anticipation of this weekend’s revival in Manhattan, one is reminded of charismatic church gatherings that in 1999 preceded the millenium celebrations. Lots of hysteria, little reason.
Using the three strikes analogy, so popular in the US, Naomi Klein — the charismatic leader seemingly destined to soon rival Oprah — struck out with her climate week plan to flood Manhattan with a People’s Climate March. As with her two previous strikes — the KXL hoax, and the divestment diversion — the Charms of Naomi only benefit Wall Street, not democracy or the environment. Klein’s new economy campaign, so seductive to A Culture of Imbeciles, likewise, will in time prove to be nothing but bubbles–or as Klein put it in her vapid new book, an “effervescent moment.”
Our only hope is informational public health. The delusions of grandeur in the Klein cult house of cards will eventually collapse. At that point, the present hysteria might look tame by comparison.

 

Never Land: The Chimera of Clean Energy

The Climateers demand to end fossil fuels is so nonsensical, no one but progressives would suggest it. This gets into the Never Land fantasies, so pervasive in this milieu. Our society would collapse without fossil fuels, yet the chimera of clean energy (whatever that is) lures Klein groupies like the sirens. Seductive energy tales, like most fairy tales, contain a little bit of truth and a whole lot of fantasy.
The Klein mantra against capitalism as the culprit for climate change oddly never mentions the word consumerism. Blaming Wall Street is popular; challenging American gluttony is not. If the capitalist system is supported by consumerism, militarism and racism, then we would benefit from targeting them.
Klein’s radical chic persona as anti-capitalist Superwoman — marketed everywhere in media — obscures the fact that capitalism is perpetuated by brainwashing, propaganda and social engineering. Something Klein and 350 have a lot of experience at.

 

Two Minute Hate

In George Orwell’s novel 1984, he writes about a future dystopia, where ubiquitous government-controlled telescreens pump propaganda into every home and office. One of the daily programs that was required viewing in this dystopia was the Two Minute Hate, where fictitious evil monsters are demonized on screen, and viewing audiences participate in mandatory rants to exhibit their social conformity.
Fast forward thirty years to 2014, and the Two Minute Hate — thanks to social media — has become a 24/7 toxic wasteland, where any idiot with an opinion can join others in ganging up on thoughtful writers, or in echoing propaganda absorbed from NGOs functioning as fronts for Wall Street and the Pentagon. Having established these mind control operatives of the non-profit industrial complex for the purpose of social engineering, the American aristocracy can with the push of a button mobilize swarms of social media imbeciles in support of war, environmental destruction, or racism–all in the name of humanity.
In her article Syria: Avaaz, Purpose & the Art of Selling Hate for Empire, Cory Morningstar examines how one of the most powerful NGOs on the planet — using the social media equivalent of the Two Minute Hate — herds mindless consumers to rally behind crimes against humanity. With its specialized teams devoted to capitalist imperialism, privatization, and ecological exploitation, Avaaz (also a main organizer of the climate week charades in New York) and its PR partner Purpose are arguably the ultimate psywar combination of all time. As Wall Street creations, they have managed to co-opt 350 and many pseudo activists claiming to be promoters of civil and human rights.

Moral Theatrics Careers

Careers in the moral theatrics industry are not hard to come by, given all the corporate money available for this purpose. Charms of Naomi: The Mystique of Mass Hypnosis

Hypnotic induction -- getting a person into a trance or state of increased suggestibility -- during which critical faculties are reduced and subjects are more prone to accept suggestions, might help to describe the current fascination with Naomi Klein. While the popularly-expected cultural rituals of celebrity worship in America are familiar to anyone who watches television or reads People Magazine, its application to social media has become a powerful new tool of social engineering by Wall Street. The process of influencing a mass audience to respond reflexively to induced prompts -- like marching in parades or flooding financial districts wearing the color blue -- requires looking beyond the civil society fad of I-pad revolution, and examining modern social "movements" as cults. Icons like Klein are as interchangeable as Hollywood starlets, but mass hypnosis of social activists by Wall Street titans using foundation-funded NGOs is a troubling development.

When Klein and McKibben herded thousands of college students across America to fight climate change by forcing their schools to divest in fossil fuels, no one stopped to ask if that would make any difference. Using the emotive force of the idea of divestment as people power --  based on an intentional association with its use in South Africa and Palestine -- 350 inducted hypnotic behavior that omitted any critical judgment. The fact that apartheid was opposed by a combination of boycott, divestment and sanction by national and international institutions in support of armed insurrection was lost on the climateers. Instead, they were hypnotized into believing that colleges selling back fossil fuel shares to Wall Street (where unscrupulous investors could then make a killing) was part of a magical social revolution. The same could apply to the nonsensical demand to end fossil fuels.

The mystery of the KXL distraction, revealed by Cory Morningstar to be a choreographed hoax funded by Warren Buffett, is yet another example of hypnotic behavior absent critical judgment. As noted by Morningstar, the KXL protests and hoopla promoted by 350 made it possible for Buffett to develop an oil-by-rail empire, now threatening communities across North America with bomb trains, like the one that devastated the town of Lac Megantic, Quebec in 2013. As a diversion calculated to lessen effective opposition to fossil fuel export and over-consumption, seductive energy tales and celebrity-laden photo-ops in front of the White House substituted for popular education and political organizing. By the time Klein's followers figure out they were duped into being Buffett's pawns, he and his friend Bill Gates will have made a fortune shipping Tar Sands bitumen and Bakken Shale crude. For the present, the climateers have taken up poster-coloring and holding hands.

Klein's aura, meanwhile, has taken on a life of its own. Having memorized her mantra This Changes Everything, climateers and other devotees are now all abuzz over her mesmerizing campaign against capitalism. No one asks how that meshes with Klein's 350 being the darling of Warren Buffett and the Rockefeller Brothers, but suspension of disbelief is nothing new to Klein groupies. As gullible left-wing media begins yet another social media gossip fest over how far left the new incarnation of rhetorical revolutionary fervor might go, 350's Blue Team and other Klein followers double down on dubious diversions. As Klein and her colleagues work feverishly in creating cover narratives that lefties can flog as insightful op-eds to coincide with the never-ending anti-capitalist revolutionary historic Rockefeller-financed 350 events, it is hard to avoid comparisons with George Orwell's Ministry of Truth in his novel, 1984.

After the groupie chatter and celebrity banalities of climate week subside, trite starlets like Klein will carry on with their Wall Street-backed charades. The question is whether their adherents will reject the fantasy world of vapid luminaries become famous by stating blatantly obvious platitudes, or continue to be wowed by their cult-like mastery. For now, the hoax endures.

In Keystone XL: The Art of NGO Discourse, Cory Morningstar reveals how Warren Buffett used 350 to herd the climateers into the KXL distraction so his oil-by-rail empire could develop. Obscuring his stock market money via his family foundation NoVo, Buffett then laundered it through TIDES to fund 350, thus creating an illusion of green activism, that in reality was a corporate front. By financing campaigns presented as “grassroots,” Buffet thereby hoodwinked the climateers into doing his bidding.

Guiding Light: Neoliberalism and Ronald Reagan

Neoliberalism is a quaint term, that when applied to its leading lights like Obama and Hillary, seems almost benign. Who could be against the first Black president of the US, and his heir apparent, potentially the first woman president of the US?

Neoliberalism, however, is rooted in the Reagan Revolution of 1980, when this long-time fascist and former Hollywood FBI anti-Communist snitch teamed up with Ed Meese, the former Bay Area anti-free speech prosecutor, to create the most criminal U.S. administration in history. In fact, when campaigning for president in 2008, Obama publicly announced that his ideological mentor was Ronald Reagan.

While Reagan's term as Governor of California in the 1960s was replete with FBI collusion against the Free Speech Movement, initiated by students at UC Berkeley, his career as an informer during the HUAC witch hunts against Hollywood screenwriters and actors were his formative years.  The fact Obama chose him as his guiding light says something definitive about Neoliberalism.

One has to wonder what kind of Kool-Aid the Klein Kids have been drinking.

 

If Only We Believe: The New Green Economy

Rockefeller-influenced NGOs, or RINGOs, are arguably the Wall Street junta of the new green economy. As adept managers of advertising and public relations, RINGOs like 350 make regular use of techniques like branding to herd their followers. As such, social engineering by RINGOs, like the No KXL campaign, uses Mad Men methods to manipulate a mass audience.
As Cory Morningstar notes in Yes Logo: The McKibben-Klein Doctrine, 350 — Naomi Klein’s radical RINGO chariot — uses corporate branding developed for Obama (sunrise over stars and stripes) to create an attitude that generates a powerful subconscious feeling. This consumer psychology in our era of “accelerating social engineering,” says Morningstar, ‘embodies an emotional chimera of “hope” and “change” that we can choose to believe in.’ Attitude branding, she says, is “a very sophisticated and calculated method of indoctrination, perhaps one of the highest (and most subtle) forms of psychological manipulation/brainwashing.”
Ironically, notes Morningstar, the Obama brand utilized by 350 is a ‘compelling example of the indoctrinating attitude branding that Naomi Klein describes as “fetish strategy” in her 2000 book No Logo.’ In this way, owning the “change” ideology appropriated from Obama, Klein, notes Morningstar, ‘reinforced the illusion that this same iconic “change” is still sitting right in front of us, ours for the taking, if  only we believe.’

Progressive Self-Delusion: From Hope and Change to This Changes Everything

When Obama was running for president in 2008, a prevalent fantasy among progressives was that Obama was a cunning community organizer, who cleverly outfoxed America’s aristocracy, thus becoming the front-running Democratic candidate while they weren’t looking. The reality, of course, was that Obama had sold his soul to Goldman Sachs in 2004, thus ensuring that America’s aristocracy was solidly behind his historic candidacy.
During Obama’s 2008 campaign, his community organizing employer, Ralph Nader, stated publicly that Obama was just another opportunist, who’d padded his populist resume by doing a stint in his organization. Nader also noted Obama’s sell out, which had been documented in an article at Harper’s in November 2006, but progressives were already hallucinating on the Hope and Change Kool-Aid, making it impossible for this dose of reality to take effect.
When 350 started using a modified Obama logo, to brand its Rockefeller-financed campaigns as progressive, they were simply usurping an emotive symbol known for its mesmerizing effect. When 350’s Naomi Klein marketed herself as radical chic, anti-capitalist Superwoman, she was counting on the proven gullibility of American greens.
True to form, progressive suspension of disbelief enabled Klein to create a separate reality, where she miraculously tricked the aristocracy into backing her socialist revolution under the slogan This Changes Everything. Even the oil industry’s cashing in on her phony XL and divestment campaigns wasn’t enough for progressives to withdraw from her spell. As their new cultural icon, her celebrity completely overwhelms any critical judgment they might have acquired after Hope and Change.
As infantile consumers of spectacle, American progressives will apparently believe anything, as long as it is packaged in a wrapper of false hope, decorated with catchy phrases, and promoted as a painless revolution that asks no sacrifice, but promises them the world on a platter. In time, This Changes Everything, likeHope and Change, will be relegated to the dustbin of empty campaign promises. At which point, if history is any guide, progressives will partake of group therapy sessions, and prepare themselves to be duped again.

NGOs: Corporate Nodes on Society's Central Nervous System

Corporate or Foundation-endowed NGOs are global finance’s way of buying into resistance movements, literally like shareholders buy shares in companies, and then try to control them from within. They sit like nodes on the central nervous system, the pathways along which global finance flows. 

They work like transmitters, receivers, shock absorbers, alert to every impulse, careful never to annoy the governments of their host countries. They serve as listening posts, their reports and workshops and other missionary activity feeding data into an increasingly aggressive system of surveillance of increasingly hardening States.

Armed with their billions, these NGOs have waded into the world, turning potential revolutionaries into salaried activists, funding artists, intellectuals and filmmakers, gently luring them away from radical confrontation, ushering them in the direction of multi-culturalism, gender, community development—the discourse couched in the language of identity politics and human rights.

Wag the Dog: Campaigns of Purpose

In 1997, Robert De Niro and Barry Levinson produced a movie called Wag the Dog, a fictional film about a Washington-based PR firm -- days before a presidential election -- "that distracts the electorate from a sex scandal by hiring a Hollywood film producer to construct a fake war with Albania." The film was released one month before the Monica Lewinsky scandal and the bombing of Sudan by President Clinton.

Some might also recall the false testimony by a Kuwait Royal Family member about Iraqi human rights abuses -- part of a campaign created for $11 million by US PR firm Hill & Knowlton on behalf of Citizens for a Free Kuwait (a front for the Kuwait Government) -- that was used by the Pentagon to justify the 1991 invasion of Iraq, otherwise known as the Gulf War. As noted at Wikipedia,

Among many other means of influencing U.S. opinion (distributing books on Iraqi atrocities to U.S. soldiers deployed in the region, 'Free Kuwait' T-shirts and speakers to college campuses, and dozens of video news releases to television stations), the firm arranged for an appearance before a group of members of the U.S. Congress in which a woman identifying herself as a nurse working in the Kuwait City hospital described Iraqi soldiers pulling babies out of incubators and letting them die on the floor.[88]
The story was an influence in tipping both the public and Congress towards a war with Iraq: six Congressmen said the testimony was enough for them to support military action against Iraq and seven Senators referenced the testimony in debate. The Senate supported the military actions in a 52–47 vote. A year after the war, however, this allegation was revealed to be a fabrication. The woman who had testified was found to be a member of Kuwait's Royal Family, in fact the daughter of Kuwait's ambassador to the U.S.[88] She hadn't lived in Kuwait during the Iraqi invasion.
The details of the Hill & Knowlton public relations campaign, including the incubator testimony, were published in John R. MacArthur's Second Front: Censorship and Propaganda in the Gulf War (Berkeley, CA: University of CA Press, 1992), and came to wide public attention when an Op-ed by MacArthur was published in The New York Times. This prompted a reexamination by Amnesty International, which had originally promoted an account alleging even greater numbers of babies torn from incubators than the original fake testimony. After finding no evidence to support it, the organization issued a retraction. President Bush then repeated the incubator allegations on television.

The Pentagon statement claiming a buildup of Iraqi forces on the Kuwaiti border were later also shown to be false, as evidenced by satellite images acquired by the St. Petersburg Times.

This type of choreography was used again in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, known as the Iraq War, when U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell -- waving a vial of fake anthrax and displaying mischaracterized photos -- testified before the UN Security Council that the Pentagon had proof weapons of mass destruction were being manufactured by Iraq. Exposure of this fraud in the New York Times by former U.S. Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson led to the leaked identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame (Wilson's wife) by Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, I. Lewis Libby. 

Libby was subsequently convicted on federal charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. An investigation after the invasion showed Iraq's WMD program had ended in 1991. Despite all the claims made by Powell being discredited at the time by US and UN agencies, the momentum generated by Powell, Cheney and Defense Secretary Rumsfeld led to a war currently in its eleventh year.

Now, it turns out this scenario has repeated itself in the US campaign leading up to the 2011 bombing of Libya. The western-financed destabilization that became the Syrian Civil War is presently in its fourth year.

In 2014, the New York public relations firm Purpose created a campaign to rally international support for the Syrian "humanitarian intervention." A euphemism for armed aggression by the US and NATO in places like Libya, this Syrian campaign in 2012 was backed by the New York lobby Avaaz, which in turn set up communications support for the so-called Syrian resistance. 

In 2012, Avaaz was allegedly implicated in sponsoring fabricated videos of civilian massacres, to back deeper foreign intervention in Syria. YouTube video links of phony reporting by Avaaz associates are available in this blog report. 

The CEO of Purpose, Jeremy Heimans, is a co-founder of Avaaz. His associate, David Madden -- a World Bank and UN Development Program consultant -- is co-founder of Purpose, Avaaz and MoveOn.

Avaaz was created in part by MoveOn, a Democratic Party associated PAC, formed in response to the impeachment of President Clinton. Avaaz and MoveOn are funded in part by convicted inside-trader and billionaire hedge fund mogul George Soros.

A Matter of Theft

If young people are our future, then stealing our young people is robbing our future; stealing our young people by leading them astray into false hope, in turn, robs them of their future. The false hope industry of humanitarian causes -- invented by Wall Street-financed social entrepreneurs, and promoted by NGO charlatans and opportunists -- is thus a matter of theft.

The subjects of these humanitarian causes, however, involve serious considerations. Without the opportunity for our young people to assume their rightful responsibilities, humanity is doomed.
